World First: Nanobot Micromotors Deliver Medical Payload Inside Living Creature

In a world first, researchers from the University of California have reportedly delivered medicine directly to the stomach of a living organism using nanobots.

NANOBOTS

Scientists from the University of California are claiming that they have managed to deliver a medical payload directly into the gut tissue of a live organism using micro-motored nanobots.

Notably, the team behind the work notes that these little, microscopic machines can travel inside of the living creature and deliver the medical treatment without causing any harmful side effects related to the small bots.

Using micro-motor powered nanobots propelled by gas bubbles made from a reaction with the contents of the stomach in which they were deposited, these miniature machines have been successfully deployed in the body of a live mouse.

The tubular nanobots, which are about 20 micrometers long, 5 micrometers in diameter, and coated in zinc, are propelled by gas bubbles that are produced once the zinc reacts with the hydrochloric acid in the digestive system.

The nanobots travel at speeds of up to 60 micrometers per second and embed themselves in the stomach walls…where they remain after a full 12 hours.

MICROMACHINES

These nanobots have been previously used on organic tissue, but this marks the first time that it was tested on a living organism. The success of this test leads researchers behind the study to further explore the technology as a way to deliver targeted drugs in humans.

However, as is always the case with medical breakthroughs, treatments must undergo rigorous testing and get approval from the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) before they can be used. possible application and testing on humans will need to be studied carefully before regulatory organizations give the go-ahead.

So there is no guarantee that this will be implemented, but it is exciting research.

The study, published in the journal ACS nano, has yet to make announcements regarding the possibility of human-based trials or when such trials may begin.

पृथ्वी के बाहर जीवन की वैज्ञानिक खोज : परग्रही जीवन श्रंखला भाग २

अंतरिक्ष मे जीवन की खोज करने वाले विज्ञानीयो के अनुसार अंतरिक्ष मे जीवन के बारे मे कुछ भी निश्चित कह पाना कठीन है। हम ज्ञात भौतिकी, रसायन शास्त्र और जीव विज्ञान के नियमो के अनुसार कुछ अनुमान ही लगा सकते है।

अंतरिक्ष मे जीवन की खोज से पहले यह सुनिश्चित कर लेना आवश्यक है कि किसी ग्रह पर जीवन के लिये मूलभूत आवश्यकता क्या है? 

पृथ्वी पर जीवन और जीवन के विकास के अध्यन तथा ज्ञात भौतिकी, रसायन शास्त्र और जीव विज्ञान के नियमो के अनुसार अंतरिक्ष मे जीवन के लिये जो आवश्यक है उनमे से प्रमुख है:

● द्रव जल,
● कार्बन और
● DNA जैसे स्वयं की प्रतिकृति बनाने वाले अणु।

वैज्ञानिको का मानना है कि जीवन के लिये द्रव जल की उपस्थिती अनिवार्य है। अंतरिक्ष मे जीवन की खोज के लिये पहले द्रव जल को खोजना होगा। द्रव जल अन्य द्रवो की तुलना मे सार्वभौमिक विलायक(Universal Solvent) है, जिसमे अनेको प्रकार के रसायन घूल जाते है। द्रव जल जटिल अणुओ के निर्माण के लिये आदर्श है। द्रव जल के अणु सामान्य है और ब्रम्हाण्ड मे हर जगह पाये जाते है जबकि बाकि विलायक दुर्लभ है।

हम जानते है कि जीवन के लिये कार्बन आवश्यक है क्योंकि इसकी संयोजकता(Valencies) चार है और यह चार अन्य अणुओ के साथ बंध कर असाधारण रूप से जटिल अणु बना सकता है। विशेषतः कार्बण अणु की श्रंखला बनाना आसान है जोकि हायड़्रोकार्बन और कार्बनीक रसायन का आधार है। चार संयोजकता वाले अन्य तत्व कार्बन के जैसे जटिक अणु नही बना पाते है।

स्टेनली मीलर और हैराल्ड उरे द्वारा किया गया प्रयोग

१९५३ मे स्टेनली मीलर और हैराल्ड उरे द्वारा किये गये प्रयोग ने यह सिद्ध कीया था कि सहज जीवन निर्माण यह कार्बनीक रसायन का प्राकृतिक उत्पाद है। उन्होने अमोनिया, मीथेन और कुछ अन्य रसायन (जो पृथ्वी की प्रारंभिक अवस्था मे थे) के घोल को एक फ्लास्क मे लीया और उसमे से विद्युतधारा प्रवाहित की और इंतजार करते रहे। एक सप्ताह मे ही उन्होने फ्लास्क मे अमीनो अम्ल (Amino Acid) को निर्मीत होते देखा। विद्युत धारा अमोनिया और मीथेन के कार्बन बंधनो को तोड़कर उन्हे अमीनो अम्ल मे बदलने मे सक्षम थी। अमीनो अम्ल प्रोटीन का प्राथमिक रूप है। इसके बाद मे अमीनो अम्ल को उल्काओ मे और गहन अंतरिक्ष के गैस के बादलो मे भी पाया गया है।

जीवन का मूलभूत आधार है स्वयं की प्रतिकृति बनाने वाले अणु जिन्हे हम डी एन ए कहते है। रसायन विज्ञान मे इस तरह के स्वयं की प्रतिकृति बनाने वाले अणु दूर्लभ है। पृथ्वी पर पहले डीएनए के अणु के निर्माण के लिये करोड़ो वर्ष लगे। संभवतः ये अणु सागर की गहराईयो मे बने। यदि कोई मीलर-उरे के प्रयोग को करोड़ो वर्ष तक सागर मे जारी रखे तो डीएनए के अणु सहज रूप से बनने लगेंगे। प्रथम डीएनए के अणु का निर्माण शायद सागर की गहराईयो मे ज्वालामुखी के मुहानो हुआ होगा क्योंकि ज्वालामुखी के मुहानो की गतिविधीया इन अणुओ के निर्माण के लिये आवश्यक उर्जा देने मे सक्षम है। यह प्रकाश संश्लेषण से के आने से पहले की गतिविधियां है। यह ज्ञात नही है कि डीएनए के अणुओ के अलावा अन्य कार्बन के जटिल अणु स्वयं की प्रतिकृती बना सकते है या नही लेकिन स्वयं की प्रतिकृती बना लेने वाले अणु डीएनए के जैसे ही होंगे।

जीवन के लिये संभवतः द्रव जल, हायड्रोकार्बन रसायन और डीएनए जैसे स्वयं की प्रतिकृती बनाने वाले अणु चाहीये। इन शर्तो का पालन करते हुये ब्रम्हाण्ड मे जीवन की संभावना की मोटे तौर पर गणना की जा सकती है। १९६१ मे कार्नेल विश्वविद्यालय के खगोलशास्त्री फ्रेंक ड्रेक ने सर्वप्रथम ऐसी ही एक गणना की थी। मंदाकिनी आकाशगंगा मे १०० बीलीयन तारे है, इसमे से आप सूर्य के जैसे तारो का अनुमान लगा सकते है, उसके बाद उनमे से ग्रहो वाले तारो का अनुमान लगा सकते है।

ड्रेक का समिकरण बहुत सारे कारको को ध्यान मे रखते हुये आकाशगंगा मे जीवन की गणना करता है। इन कारको मे प्रमूख है

1. आकाशगंगा मे तारो की जन्मदर
2. ग्रहो वाले तारो का अंश
3. तारो पर जीवन की संभावना वाले ग्रहो की संख्या
4. जीवन उत्पन्न करने वाले वास्तविक ग्रहो का अंश
5. बुद्धीमान जीवन उत्पन्न करने वाले ग्रहो का अंश
6. बुद्धिमान सभ्यता द्वारा सम्पर्क रखने की इच्छा और निपुणता का अंश
7. सभ्यता का अपेक्षित जीवनकाल

उचित आकलन लगाने के बाद और इन सभी प्रायिकताओ का गुणन करने के बाद पता चलता है कि अपनी आकाशगंगा मे ही १०० से १०००० ग्रह ऐसे होगें जिनपर बुद्धीमान जीवन की संभावना है। यदि यह बुद्धीमान जीवन आकाशगंगा मे समान रूप मे वितरित है तब हमारे कुछ सौ प्रकाश वर्ष मे ही बुद्धीमान जीवन वाला ग्रह होना चाहीये। १९७४ मे कार्ल सागन के अनुसार हमारी आकाश गंगा मे ही १० लाख सभ्यताये होना चाहीये। (ड्रेक के समीकरण का उल्लेख कार्ल सागन ने इतनी बार किया है कि इस समीकरण को सागन का समिकरण भी कहा जाता है।)

इन गणनाओ ने सौर मंडल से बाहर जीवन की संभावनाओ की खोज के लिये नये औचित्य दिये है। पृथ्वी बाह्य जीवन पाने ही इन संभावनाओ के कारण विज्ञानीयो अब गंभीर रूप से इन ग्रहो से उत्सर्जीत रेडीयो संकेतो पर ध्यान देना शुरू किया है। आखीर ये बुद्धीमान सभ्यताये भी हमारी तरह टीवी देखती होंगी ही या रेडीयो सुनती ही होंगी !

उड़नतश्तरीयां : परग्रही जीवन श्रंखला भाग 1

कुछ लोगो का विश्वास है कि परग्रही प्राणी उड़नतश्तरीयो से पृथ्वी की यात्रा कर चूके है। वैज्ञानिक सामान्यतः उड़नतश्तरी के समाचारो पर विश्वास नही करते है और तारो के मध्य की विशाल दूरी के कारण इसकी संभावना को रद्द कर देते है। वैज्ञानिको इस ठंडी प्रतिक्रिया के बावजूद उड़नतश्तरी दिखने के समाचार कम नही हुये है।

१९५२ मे न्युजर्सी स रा अमरीका मे दिखायी दी कथित उड़नतश्तरी का चित्र

उड़नतश्तरीयो के देखे जाने के दावे लिखित इतिहास की शुरुवात तक जाते है। बाईबल मे ईश्वर के दूत इजेकील ने रहस्यमय ढंग से आकाश मे ’चक्र के अंदर चक्र’ का उल्लेख किया है जिसे कुछ लोग उड़नतश्तरी मानते है। १४५० ईसा पूर्व मिश्र के फराओ टूटमोस तृतिय के काल मे मिश्री(इजिप्त) इतिहासकारो ने आकाश मे ५ मीटर आकार के ’आग के वृत’ का उल्लेख किया है जो सूर्य से ज्यादा चमकदार थे और काफी दिनो तक आकाश मे दिखायी देते रहे तथा अंत मे आकाश मे चले गये। ईसापूर्व ९१ मे रोमन लेखक जूलियस आब्सक्युन्स ने एक ग्लोब के जैसे गोलाकार पिंड के बारे मे लिखा है आकाशमार्ग से गया था। १२३४ मे जनरल योरीतसुमे और उसकी सेना ने क्योटो जापान के आकाश मे रोशनी के गोलो को आकाश मे देखा था। १५५६ मे नुरेमबर्ग जर्मनी मे आकाश मे किसी युद्ध के जैसे बहुत सारे विचित्र पिंडो को देखा था।

हाल की मे स.रा. अमरीका की वायू सेना ने उड़नतश्तरीयो के देखे जाने की घटनाओ की जांच करवायी थी। १९५२ मे ब्लू बूक प्रोजेक्ट के अंतर्गत १२,६१८ घटनाओ की जांच की गयी। इस जांच के निष्कर्षो के अनुसार उड़नतश्तरीयो को देखे जाने की अधिकतर घटनाये प्राकृतिक घटना, साधारण वायुयान या अफवाहें थी। फिर भी ६ प्रतिशत घटनाये ऐसी थी जिन्हे समझ पाना कठिन था। लेकिन कन्डोन रिपोर्ट के निष्कर्षो के अनुसार ऐसे किसी अध्यन का कोई मूल्य ना होने से १९६९ मे प्रोजेक्ट ब्लू बुक को बंद कर दिया गया। यह अमरीकी वायू सेना का उड़नतश्तरीयो के अध्यन का अंतिम ज्ञात शोध अभियान था।

२००७ मे फ्रांस की सरकार ने उडनतश्तरीयो की जांच की एक बड़ी फाईल साधारण जनता के लिये उपलब्ध करायी। इस रिपोर्ट को फ्रांस के राष्ट्रिय अंतरिक्ष अनुसंधान केन्द्र ने इंटरनेट पर उपलब्ध करा दिया है। इसके अनुसार पिछले पचास वर्षो मे १६०० उड़नतश्तरीया देखी गयी है. १००,०० पृष्ठ के चश्मदीद गवाहो के बयान, चित्र और ध्वनी टेप लिये गये है। फ्रांस सरकार के अनुसार ९ प्रतिशत घटनाओ को समझा जा सका है, ३३ प्रतिशत के पिछे संभावित कारण हो सकते है लेकिन बाकी घटनाओ के लीये कोई व्याख्या नही है।

इन घटनाओ की स्वतंत्र रूप से जांच संभव नही है। लेकिन तथ्यात्मक रूप से सावधानीपूर्वक अध्यन से अधिकतर उड़नतश्तरी की घटनाओ को निम्नलिखित कारणो मे से किसी एक के कारण माना जा सकता है:

१. शुक्र ग्रह: जो चन्द्रमा के बाद रात्री आकाश मे सबसे चमकदार पिंड है। पृथ्वी से अपनी विशाल दूरी के कारण यह ग्रह कार चालाक को उनका पिछा करता प्रतित होता है, जिससे ऐसा लगता है कि कोई यान आपके पिछे लगा हुआ है। यह कुछ उसी तरह है जिस तरह कारचालको चन्द्रमा उनका पिछा करते हुये प्रतीत होता है। हम दूरी को अपने आसपास की वस्तु के संदर्भ मे मापते है। शुक्र और चन्द्रमा आकाश मे काफी दूरी पर है और आकाश मे उनके संदर्भ के लिये कुछ नही है और वे हमारे आसपास की वस्तुओ के संदर्भ मे नही चलते है और हमे उनके हमारे पीछा करने का दृष्टीभ्रम होता है।
२. दलदली गैस : दलदली क्षेत्र मे तापमान के परिवर्तन होने पर दलदल से उत्सर्जित गैस जमीन से कुछ उपर तैरती रहती है और यह गैस थोड़ी चमकदार भी होती है। गैस के छोटे टुकड़े बड़े टुकड़ो से टूटकर अलग होते है और ऐसा भ्रम होता है कि छोटे यान बड़े मातृ यान से अलग होकर जा रहे है।
३. उल्का : कुछ ही क्षणो मे रात्री आकाश के पार प्रकाश की चमकदार रेखाओ के रूप मे उल्का किसी प्राणी चालित यान का भ्रम उत्पन्न करती है। ये टूट भी जाती है जिससे भी ऐसा भ्रम होता है कि छोटे यान बड़े मातृ यान से अलग होकर जा रहे है।

सेन्टीलीनीयल बादल कभी कभी उड़नतश्तरी जैसे दिखते है।

४. वातावरण की प्राकृतिक घटनाये : तड़ित युक्त तुफान और असाधारण वातावरण की घटनाये भी कभी कभी आकाश को असामान्य विचित्र रूप से प्रकाशित कर देती है जिनसे भी उड़नतश्तरीयो का भ्रम होता है। सेन्टीलीनीयल बादल भी उड़नतश्तरीयो के जैसे प्रतित होते है।

बीसवीं और इक्कीसवी सदी मे निम्नलिखित कारक भी उड़नतश्तरीयो का भ्रम उत्पन्न कर सकते है;

१. राडार प्रतिध्वनी: राडार तरंगे पर्वतो से टकराकर प्रतिध्वनी उत्पन्न कर सकती है जिन्हे राडार निरिक्षक पकड़ सकता है। यह तरंगें जीगजैग करते हुये और अत्यधिक गति से राडार के परदे पर देखी जा सकती है क्योंकि ये प्रतिध्वनी है।
२.मौसम और शोध के गुब्बारे : एक विवादित सैन्य दावे के अनुसार १९४७ की प्रसिद्ध रोसवेल न्युमेक्सीको की उड़नतश्तरी दूर्घटना एक मौसम के गुब्बारे की दूर्घटना थी। यह गुब्बारा एक गोपनिय प्रोझेक्ट मोगुल का गुब्बारा था जो आकाश मे परमाणु युद्ध की परिस्थितियों मे विकिरण को मापने का प्रयोग कर रहा था।
३. वायुयान : व्यावसायिक और सैन्य वायुयान भी कभी कभी उड़न तश्तरी मान लिये जाते है। यह प्रायोगिक सैन्य वायुयानो जैसे स्टील्थ बमवर्षक यानो के मामलो मे ज्यादा होता है। अमरीकी वायूसेना ने अपने गोपनीय प्रोजेक्टो को पर्दे मे रखने के लिये उड़न तश्तरी देखे जाने की कहानियो को बढा़वा भी दिया था।
४. जानबुझकर फैलायी गयी अपवाह :

जार्ज एडामस्की द्वारा दिया गया उड़नतश्तरी का चित्र जो वास्तव मे मुर्गीयो को दाना देने वाली मशीन का है।

उड़नतश्तरीयो के कुछ प्रसिद्ध चित्र अपवाह है। एक प्रसिद्ध उड़नतश्तरी का चित्र जिसमे खिड़कीया और लैण्ड करने के पैर दिखायी दे रहे है एक मुर्गी को दाना देने वाली मशीन का था।

कम से कम ९५ प्रतिशत उड़नतश्तरीयो की घटनाओ को उपर दिये गये कारणो मे से किसी एक के कारण रद्द किया जा सकता है। लेकिन कुछ प्रतिशत घटनाओ की कोई संतोषजनक व्याख्या नही है। उड़नतश्तरीयो की विश्वासपात्र घटनाओ के लिये आवश्यक है :

अ) किसी स्वतंत्र विश्वासपात्र चश्मदीद गवाह द्वारा एकाधिक बार देखा जाना
ब)एकाधिक श्रोतो के प्रमाण जैसे आंखो और राडार द्वारा उडन तश्तरी की देखा जाना।
ऐसी रिपोर्टो को रद्द करना कठीन होता है क्योंकि इनमे कई स्वतंत्र जांच शामिल होती है। उदाहरण के लिये १९८६ मे अलास्का पर जापान एअरलाईन्स की उड़ान JAL १६२८ द्वारा उड़नतश्तरी का देखा जाना है जिसकी जांच FAA ने की थी। इस उड़नतश्तरी को इस उड़ान के यात्रीयो के अतिरिक्त जमीन के राडार से भी देखा गया था। इसीतरह १९८९-९० मे नाटो के राडारो और जेट इन्टरसेप्टरो द्वारा बेल्जीयम के उपर काले त्रिभूजो को देखा गया था। सी आई ए के दस्तावेजो के अनुसार १९७६ मे इरान के तेहरान के उपर उड़नतश्तरी को देखा गया था जिसमे एक जेट इन्टरसेप्टर एफ ४ के उपकरण खराब हो गये थे।

वैज्ञानिको के लिये सबसे निराशाजनक बात यह है कि उड़नतश्तरियो को देखे जाने की हजारो घटनाओ के बावजूद किसी भी घटना ने एक भी ऐसा सबूत नही छोड़ा है जिसकी किसी प्रयोगशाला मे जांच की जा सके। कोई परग्रही डी एन ए, कोई परग्रही कम्प्युटर चिप या किसी उड़नतश्तरी के उतरने का भौतिक प्रमाण आज तक प्राप्त नही हुआ है।

चश्मदीद गवाहों के बयानो पर आधारित उड़नतश्तरीयों के गुण

यह मानते हुये कि उड़नतश्तरीयां भ्रम ना होकर वास्तविक यान है; हम कुछ ऐसे प्रशन कर सकते है जिससे यह पता चले कि यह किस तरह के यान है। उड़नतश्तरीयो के चश्मदीद गवाहो के बयानो के आधार पर विज्ञानियों ने इनके निम्नलिखित गुण नोट कीये है:

अ) वे हवा मे जीगजैग यात्रा करती है।
ब) वे कार के इंजन को बंद करदेती है और यात्रा के मार्ग मे विद्युत उर्जा को प्रभावित करती है।
क) वे हवा मे निशब्द तैरती है।
इनमे से कोई भी गुण पृथ्वी पर विकसीत किसी भी राकेट से नही मिलता है। उदाहरण के लिये सभी ज्ञात राकेट न्युटन के गति के  तीसरे नियम(हर क्रिया की तुल्य किंतु विपरित प्रतिक्रिया होती है) पर निर्भर है; लेकिन किसी भी उड़नतश्तरी की घटना मे प्रणोदन प्रणाली का वर्णन नही है। परग्रही उड़नतश्तरी को पृथ्वी के गुरुत्वाकर्षण से बाहर जाने के लिये प्रणोदन प्रणाली का होना अत्यावश्यक है। हमारे सभी अंतरिक्ष यानो मे प्रणोदन प्रणाली होती है।

उडनतश्तरीयो द्वारा वायू मे जीगजैग करते हुये उड़ान से उत्पन्न गुरुत्वबल जो पृथ्वी के गुरुत्व से सैकड़ो गुणा ज्यादा होगा, यह पृथ्वी के किसी भी प्राणी को पापड़ के जैसा चपटा कर देने के लिये काफी है।

क्या उड़नतश्तरीयो के ऐसे गुणो की आधुनिक विज्ञान द्वारा व्याख्या की जा सकती है ?

स्वचालित उड़नतश्तरियां या अर्धमशीनी चालक

हालीवुड की फिल्मे जैसे “अर्थ वर्सेस द फ्लाईंग सासर” यह मानती है कि उड़नतश्तरीया परग्रही प्राणियो द्वारा चालित होती है। लेकिन यह संभव है कि उड़नतश्तरीयां स्वचालित हो या इसके चालक अर्धमशीनी हो। स्वचालित यान या अर्धमशीनी चालक जीगजैग उड़ान से उत्पन्न गुरुत्व बल को झेल सकता है जो कि किसी प्राणी को कुचलने मे सक्षम है।

एक यान जो किसी कार के इंजन को बंद कर सकता है और वायु मे शांति से गति कर सकता है, चुंबकिय बल से चालित होना चाहिये। लेकिन चुंबकिय प्रणोदन के साथ समस्या यह है कि वह हमेशा दो ध्रुवो के साथ आता है, एक उत्तर ध्रुव और एक दक्षिण ध्रुव। कोई भी द्विध्रुवी चुंबक पृथ्वी पर उपर उड़ने की बजाये कम्पास की सुई के जैसे घुमते रह जायेगा क्योंकि पृथ्वी स्वंय एक चुंबक है। दक्षिणी ध्रुव एक दिशा मे गति करेगा जबकि उत्तरी ध्रुव विपरित दिशा मे, इससे चुंबक गोल घूमते रहेगा और कहीं नही जा पायेगा।

एकध्रुविय चुंबक

इस समस्या का समाधान एकध्रुवीय चुंबक का प्रयोग है, अर्थात ऐसा चुंबक जिसका एक ही ध्रुव हो, उत्तर ध्रुव या दक्षिण ध्रुव। सामान्यतः किसी चुंबक को आधे से तोड़ने पर दो एकध्रुव चुंबक नही बनते है, उसकी बजाय दोनो टूकड़े अपने अपने उत्तरी और दक्षिणी ध्रुवो के साथ द्विध्रुवीय चुंबक बन जाते है। इसतरह आप किसी चुंबक को तोड़ते जाये, हर टूकड़ा अपने अपने उत्तरी और दक्षिणी ध्रुवों द्विध्रुवीय चुंबक ही रहेगा। ऐसा परमाण्विक स्तर तक पहुंचते तक जारी रहेगा जहां परमाणु स्वयं द्विध्रुवीय है।
विज्ञानियो के सामने समस्या है कि एकध्रुवीय चुंबक प्रयोगशाला मे कभी नही देखा गया है। भौतिकी विज्ञानियो ने अपने उपकरणो से एकध्रुवीय चुंबक के चित्र लेने के प्रयास किये है लेकिन असफल रहे है।(१९८२ मे स्टैनफोर्ड विश्व विद्यालय मे ली गयी एक अत्यंत विवादास्पद तस्वीर इसका अपवाद है।)

एकध्रुवी चुंबक को प्रयोगशाला मे नही देखा गया है लेकिन भौतिकी विज्ञानियो का मानना है कि ब्रह्माण्ड के जन्म के तुरंत पश्चात एकध्रुविय चुंबक की बहुतायत रही होगी। यह धारणा ब्रह्माण्ड की उत्पत्ति के महाविस्फोट(Big Bang) आधारित आधुनिक सिद्धांतो पर आधारित है, एकध्रुवीय चुंबक  का घनत्व ब्रह्माण्ड के विस्तार के साथ कम होता गया है, और आज वे दूर्लभ हो गये है। तथ्य यह है कि एकध्रुवीय चुंबक का दूर्लभ होने ने ही विज्ञानियो को विस्तृत होते ब्रह्माण्ड के सिद्धांत के प्रतिपादन के लिये प्रोत्साहित किया है। इसलिये सैधांतिक रूप से एक ध्रुवीय चुंबक का आस्तित्व भौतिकी मे पहले से ही संभव है।

यह माना जा सकता है अंतरिक्ष यात्रा मे सक्षम परग्रही प्रजाति महाविस्फोट(Big Bang) के पश्चात शेष मौलिक एकध्रुवीय चुंबको को अंतरिक्ष मे एक बड़े चुंबकिय जाल से समेट कर अपने प्रयोग मे ला सकती है। जैसे ही उनके पास पर्याप्त एकध्रुव चुंबक जमा हो गये वे अंतरिक्ष मे फैली चुंबकीय रेखाओ पर सवार होकर बिना किसी प्रणोदन के यात्रा कर सकते है। एकध्रुवीय चुंबक भौतिकविज्ञानियो के आकर्षण का केन्द्र है और एक ध्रुवीय चुंबक आधारित यान विज्ञान की अभी तक ज्ञात अवधारणा के अनुरूप है।

ऐसी कोई भी परग्रही सभ्यता जो ब्रह्मांड मे कहीं भी अंतरिक्षयान भेज सकती है , नैनो टेक्नालाजी का ज्ञान अवश्य रखती होगी। इसका अर्थ यह है कि उनके अंतरिक्षयानो का विशालकाय होना आवश्यक नही है। नैनो अंतरिक्षयान लाखो की संख्या मे अंतरिक्ष मे ग्रहो पर जीवन की थाह लेने के लिये भेजे जा सकते है। ग्रहो के चन्द्रमा ऐसे नैनो अंतरिक्ष यानो के लिये आधारकेन्द्र हो सकते है। यदि ऐसा है तो भूतकाल मे वर्ग ३ की सभ्यता हमारे चन्द्रमा की यात्रा कर चूकी है। यह संभव है कि ये यान स्वचालित और रोबोटिक होंगे और चन्द्रमा पर आज भी होंगे। मानव सभ्यता को पूरे चन्द्रमा पर ऐसे नैनो अंतरिक्ष यानो के अवशेष या प्रमाण की खोज मे सक्षम होने मे अभी एक शताब्दी और लगेगी।

यदि हमारे चन्द्रमा की परग्रही सभ्यता यात्रा कर चूके है या वह उनके नैनो अंतरिक्ष यानो का आधारकेन्द्र रहा है तो कोई आश्चर्य नही कि उड़नतश्तरीयां विशालकाय नही होती है। कुछ विज्ञानी उड़नतश्तरीयो को इस लिये भी अफवाह मानते है क्योंकि वे किसी भी विशालकाय प्रणोदन प्रणाली के अभिकल्पन(Design) के अनुरूप नही है। उनके अनुसार ब्रह्मांडीय अंतरिक्ष यात्रा के लिये विशालकाय प्रणोदन प्रणाली आवश्यक है जिसमे रैमजेट संलयन इंजीन, विशालकाय लेजरचालित पाल तथा नाभिकिय पल्स इंजिन है जोकि कई किलोमीटर चौड़े हो सकते है। उड़नतश्तरीयां जेट विमान के जैसे छोटी नही हो सकती है। लेकिन यदि चन्द्रमा पर उनका आधार केन्द्र है तो वह छोटी हो सकती है और वे चन्द्रमा पर अपने आधारकेन्द्र से इंधन ले सकती है। उड़न तश्तरीयो को देखे जाने की घटनाये चन्द्रमा के आधारकेन्द्र से आ रहे स्वचालित प्राणी रहित  यानो की हो सकती है।

ब्रह्माण्ड की विशालकाय दूरी

उड़नतश्तरीयों के विरोध मे सबसे बड़ा तर्क है कि ब्रह्मांड इतना विशाल है कि इसकी दूरीयों को पार कर उड़नतश्तरीयों का पृथ्वी तक आना लगभग असंभव है। पृथ्वी तक पहुंचने के लिए प्रकाश गति से भी तेज़ चलने वाला यान चाहिये जो कि मानव द्वारा ज्ञात भौतिकी के नियमों के विरूद्ध है। पृथ्वी के निकट का तारा भी ४ प्रकाशवर्ष दूर है, प्रकाशगति से चलने वाले यान को भी वहां से पृथ्वी तक आने मे ४ वर्ष लगेंगे। कुल यात्रा के कम से कम आठ वर्षो की यात्रा के लिए सक्षम यान को विशालकाय होना चाहिये। अब तक उड़नतश्तरीयो की जितनी भी रिपोर्ट मिली है उसमे उड़नतश्तरीयां विशालकाय नही हैं।

परग्रही जीवन और भविष्य

सेटी प्रोजेक्ट मे आयी तेजी और तेजी से खोजे जा रहे सौर बाह्य ग्रहो से ऐसा प्रतित होता है कि यदि हमारे समीप कहीं बुद्धिमान जीवन है तो एक शताब्दि के अंदर उनसे संपर्क स्थापित हो सकता है। कुछ प्रश्न अभी भी अनुत्तरित है जैसे:

यदि परग्रही सभ्यता का अस्तित्व है, क्या हम कभी उन तक पहुंच पायेंगे ?

Global Positioning System

Since  ages  man  has  invented  various  instruments  to  assist  him  in  navigation  on  earth.  Magnetic compass  is  one  of  the  oldest  navigational  instrument  man  has  been  using  for  many  centuries  for direction  identification  on  earth’s  surface.  

Global  Positioning  System  (GPS)  based  devices  are  the latest  navigation  assistance  devices  used  these  days.  GPS  devices  provide  accurate  real  time  location and  much  more  information  to  its  user  for  easier  and  comfortable  navigation  even  through  his  or  her local  streets.  A  commonly  available  GPS  device  is  shown  in  the  figure.  When  fitted  in  a  car,  it  shows speed of the car, time, longitude coordinates and map of near-by area. 

What  is Global  Positioning  System  (GPS)?

Global  positioning  system  GPS  is  a  method  of  identifying  location  or  position  of  any  point  (or  a person)  on  earth  using  a  system  of  24  satellites,  which  are  continuously  orbiting,  observing, monitoring  and  mapping  the  earth  surface.  Every  such  satellite  revolves  around  earth  twice  a  day  at  a distance  of  about  20000  km  from  it.  The  given  figure  shows  sketch  view  of  24  GPS  satellites  orbiting around  the  earth.   The  orbits  of  these  satellites  are  so  aligned  that  at  least  four  of  them  always  keep  looking  any  given point  on  earth  surface.  This  is  minimum  necessary  requirement  for  correct  and  accurate  location identification  through  this  system.  In  the  given  figure,  the  given  location  at  the  instant  is  visible  to  12 satellites. 

Working  principle  of  a  GPS  device 

For  using  the  GPS  system  of  satellites,  a  person  needs  a  GPS  device  fitted  with  a  transmitter/receiver for  sending/receiving  signals  (electromagnetic  radio  waves)  so  that  it  can  link  up  with  GPS  satellites in real time.   The  unique  location  (or  longitude  coordinates)  of  a  GPS  user  is  determined  by  measuring  its  distance from  at  least  three  GPS  satellites.  Based  on  these  distance  measurements,  the  location  calculations  are done  by  the  microprocessor  (computing  device) fitted in the  GPS  device. For  measuring  distance  of  three  GPS  satellites  from  the  GPS  device  user,  the  time  taken  by  a  radio signal to travel from  device  to satellites and  back are  recorded by  the  GPS  device. 

For, example,  if a  radio  signal takes 0.140 seconds  to travel back  from a satellite-1 to its GPS  user.  

Following  the  above  method, let D1, D2  and D3  be  the distances of  three  satellites from a  GPS  device user.  From  this  information,  the  identification  of  unique  location  of  the  GPS  device  user  is  done  as follows: 

(1)  If  user  is  at  a  distance  “D1”  from  satellite-1.  Then  user’s  location  can  be  anywhere  on  a circumference of circle of radius “D1” from satellite-1 as shown in fig below. 

(2)  If  user  is  at  a  distance  “D2”  from  satellite-2.  Then  user’s  location  can  be  either  at  intersecting points  X  or  Y  of  circumferences  of  circles  of  radius  D1  and  D2  from  satellite-1  and  2 respectively as shown in figure below. 

(3)  If  user  is  at  a  distance  “D3”  from  satellite-3.  Then  user’s  location  will  be  at  the  intersecting point  of circumferences  of  circles  of  radius  D1,  D2  and  D3  from  satellite-1,  2  and  3  respectively  as shown in fig(c). i.e. here user is at point Y.

This  way,  minimum  three  satellites  together  provide  the  exact  location  (longitude  coordinates)  of  the GPS  device  user  on his  display  board.   

If  a  person  is  at  some  height  on  earth  surface,  then  using  distance  information  from  minimum  4-GPS satellites even altitude  of  the  user can also be measured. 

It  may  be  noted  that  since  all  24-GPS  satellites  orbit  in  predefined  orbits,  therefore  their  locations  are precisely  predetermined.  It  is  these  known locations  of  3  or  4  -GPS  satellites  (3  or  4  sets  of  longitude coordinates)  and  their  distances  to  GPS  device  that  assist  a  GPS  user  (i.e.  its  computing  device)  in locating  its own longitude  coordinates. 

Applications  of GPS   Global positioning system  has many  day-to-day  applications:   

It helps in navigation on water, air and land.   

It assists in map designing of a  location.   

It helps  automatic  vehicle  movements (without  man)   

One can measure  speed of moving object using this technology.   

One can locate  change  in  position of  glaciers, mountains heights.   

It assists in keeping standard time  world over.   

It  assists  in  tracking  animals  and  birds  and  studying  their  movements  by attaching  GPS devices to their bodies.     

It assists in  airplane  traffic  movement.  

It assists visually impaired in location identification.

Now-a-days,  various  devices  like  mobile  phones,  i-pad  etc.  come  equipped  with  pre-loaded geographical  maps  and  GPS  software  which  identifies  the  location  of  these  devices  using  GPS system. GPS is a free service available to anyone in the world with a GPS device.

Airborne Wind Turbine: To Bring Renewable Energy and WiFi

An airborne wind turbine is a design concept for a wind turbine with a rotor supported in the air without a tower,[ thus benefiting from more mechanical and aerodynamic options, the higher velocity and persistence of wind at high altitudes, while avoiding the expense of tower construction, or the need for slip rings or yaw mechanism. An electrical generator may be on the ground or airborne.

In an effort to harness strong high-altitude winds, the company Altaeros Energies has developed a floating wind turbine that’s a cross between a traditional windmill and a blimp. After some successful tests, the Altaeros team is confident that this new levitating wind turbine will be a viable clean energy option for remote villages and military sites.

The design of the Altaeros’ Airborne Wind Turbine is pretty simple. An inflatable, helium-filled shell lifts it off the ground to high altitudes, where winds are much stronger than at ground level. The airborne turbines are held steady by strong tethers, which send electricity generated by the turbine back down to the ground.

“For decades, wind turbines have required cranes and huge towers to lift a few hundred feet off the ground where winds can be slow and gusty,” said Airborne Wind Turbine inventor Ben Glass in a release. At higher altitudes, not only are winds more than five times stronger, but they’re also more consistent.

Altaeros Energies was founded in 2010 by MIT and Harvard alums. Earlier this year, the team completed testing of a 35-foot scale prototype of the Airborne Wind Turbine in Limestone, Maine. There, the floating turbine climbed to 350 feet off the ground, generated power, and landed in an automated cycle. According to a press release, the prototype produced more than twice as much power at high altitude than generated at conventional tower height.

There are of course other benefits to having a wind turbine that floats high above the ground. For one, it produces very little noise, and it requires little maintenance (and what maintenance it does require can be done at ground level). Additionally, the inflatable shroud covering the wind turbine blocks the spinning blades from being visible to nearby communities.

Electric eel - How it generate a high voltage.

The electric eel (Electrophorus electricus) is an electric fish, and the only species in that genus. Despite the name, it is not an eel, but rather a knifefish.

The electric eel has three pairs of abdominal organs that produce electricity: the main organ, the Hunter's organ, and the Sach's organ. These organs make up four-fifths of its body, and are what gives the electric eel the ability to generate two types of electric organ discharges: low voltage and high voltage. These organs are made of electrocytes, lined up so a current of ions can flow through them and stacked so each one adds to a potential difference. When the eel locates its prey, the brain sends a signal through the nervous system to the electrocytes. This opens the ion channels, allowing sodium to flow through, reversing the polarity momentarily. By causing a sudden difference in electric potential, it generates an electric current in a manner similar to a battery, in which stacked plates each produce an electric potential difference. In the electric eel, some 5,000 to 6,000 stacked electroplaques are capable of producing a shock at up to 860 volts and 1 ampere of current (600 watts) for a duration of two milliseconds. It would be extremely unlikely for such a shock to be deadly for an adult human, due to the very short duration of the discharge. Atrial fibrillation requires that roughly 700 mA be delivered across the heart muscle for 30 ms or more, far longer than the eel is able to produce. Still, this level of current is reportedly enough to produce a brief and painful numbing shock likened to a stun gun discharge, which due to the voltage can be felt for some distance from the fish; this is a common risk for aquarium caretakers and biologists attempting to handle or examine electric eels.

The Sach's organ is associated with electrolocation. Inside the organ are many muscle-like cells, called electrocytes. Each cell can only produce 0.15 V, though the organ can transmit a signal of nearly 10 V overall in amplitude at around 25 Hz in frequency. These signals are emitted by the main organ; the Hunter's organ can emit signals at rates of several hundred hertz.

The electric eel is unique among the Gymnotiformes in having large electric organs capable of producing potentially lethal discharges that allow them to stun prey. Larger voltages have been reported, but the typical output is sufficient to stun or deter virtually any animal. Juveniles produce smaller voltages (about 100 V). They are capable of varying the intensity of the electric discharge, using lower discharges for hunting and higher intensities for stunning prey or defending themselves. They can also concentrate the discharge by curling up and making contact at two points along its body. When agitated, they are capable of producing these intermittent electric shocks over a period of at least an hour without tiring.

The electric eel also possesses high frequency-sensitive tuberous receptors, which are distributed in patches over its body. This feature is apparently useful for hunting other Gymnotiformes.

We Know The Speed of Light But What Is The Speed of Dark ?

This question, like many others, centers on a negative concept. There are a few of these running around and it is fairly common to get tripped up by them, but part of the fun in science is when you can apply negative concepts to positive ones, helping us better understand how each facet of the universe work together AND independently. One such negative concept asks: “What is darkness?” “And is there such a thing as the speed of darkness?”

In order to know what the speed of darkness is, or anything else about it, we would have to quantify it. What is it? Well darkness is the absence of light. So darkness isn’t a thing, it is instead a lack of a thing. Therefore questions about characteristic of darkness, which is an absence instead of a presence, become hard to define.

The most correct answer to the question would be that darkness has no speed. In order for something to have speed, it must be able to move relative to other bodies. Since darkness doesn’t actually exist, it cannot move and therefore cannot have a speed. However, since the level of illumination of a given area cannot change at a different rate than the speed of light, you could also equate it as having the speed of light, though less correctly.

I’ll use an example to make my point. Lets say you are in a room which is completely sealed off from the outside world, and nothing can enter it (particularly light). In this room you have a perfect light bulb. It has no warm up or cool down time, when you flip the switch, it instantly starts or stops producing a steady stream of light. In addition to this, let’s say that the walls do not reflect light, but instead completely absorb it. For convenience, let’s make the room round and have the light bulb at the center. Most of this can’t actually be done, but this is still a helpful thought experiment.

Now lets say we suddenly turn off the light bulb. The light will travel at a predictable speed from the bulb, and as it does, it will leave behind it an area without any light at all (meaning the light in the room is receding at the speed of light. Note that the darkness isn’t advancing, but the light is receding. As I’ve said earlier, darkness isn’t actually a thing; therefore, it cannot have a speed.

However the lack of light in our hypothetical room is spreading at the speed of light. Colloquially, this is a minor point. It is however a very important distinction. Darkness doesn’t exist, and therefore cannot spread or move, but light (which obviously does exist) can. And in doing so it can also leave an absence of light, and this absence will grow or shrink at the speed of light.

Since darkness isn’t a tangible thing, it is hard to properly quantify its characteristics. It doesn’t have a speed, but light will always advance or recede at the universal speed limit (186,000 miles per second, or 299,792,458 meters per second).

ऐसा क्यों होता है, इस बात ने विज्ञान को भी लंबे समय तक हैरत में रखा। इसके पीछे की सच्चाई जानने के लिए स्रिक्प इंस्टीट्यूट ऑफ ओशियनोग्राफी, युनिवर्सिटी ऑफ कैलिफोर्निया के सैन डियागो के वैज्ञानिकों ने पहल की।

एबीसी डॉटकॉम के मुताबिक इसके लिए उन्होंने सबसे पहले रिचर्ड नॉरिस और जेम्स नॉरिस ने उस रहस्यमयी रास्ते पर जीपीएस डिवाइस लगा दिए और उसको देखना शुय किया। आपको बता दें इस जगह को डेथ वैली या फिर सेलिंग स्टोन नाम से भी जाना जाता है।

उन्होंने सबसे पहली बार इस रास्ते का साइंटेफिक ऑबजरवेशन किया और इसकी फोटोग्राफी भी। साल 2013 के 20 दिसंबर महीने में उन्होंने 60 पत्‍थरों को मूव होते देखा।

बाद में उन्होंने डिस्कवर किया कि पत्‍थरों पर असल में हल्की बर्फ की परत होती है। सर्दियों के समय धूप होने पर वो गलने लगती है। तभी पत्‍थर पर पड़ा थोड़ा गीला पानी, बर्फ के अति छोटे कण और हवा के दबाव से वो खिसकने लगते हैं।

ऐसा देखकर लगता है कि पत्‍थर खुदबखुद ही यहां चलते हों। किसी आदमी को इसकी पीछे की सच्चाई पता ना हो, तो हो सकता है कि वो ये सब देखकर डर भी जाए।

The mysterious moving stones of the packed-mud desert of Death Valley have been a center of scientific controversy for decades. Rocks weighing up to hundreds of pounds have been known to move up to hundreds of yards at a time. Some scientists have proposed that a combination of strong winds and surface ice account for these movements. However, this theory does not explain evidence of different rocks starting side by side and moving at different rates and in disparate directions. Moreover, the physics calculations do not fully support this theory as wind speeds of hundreds of miles per hour would be needed to move some of the stones.

Wind and ice both are the favored hypothesis for these mysterious sliding rocks. But as those are only hypothesises, we can say that the mystery remains...

So imagine this: You're strolling along a road in the Andes when suddenly you come across a patch of very spiky ice - spikes that hit as high as your waist, as high as your shoulders. There isn't any other snow around, just rocks and gravel... and these strange spikes of ice.

It'd be a little weird, right? These are called Penitentes (or nieves penitentes). The tall, thin spikes are typically blade-shaped and can be found at high altitudes above 13,000 feet and are made of hardened snow or ice. The blades usually are oriented toward the sun.

These amazing ice spikes, generally known as penitentes due to their resemblance to processions of white-hooded monks, can be found on mountain glaciers and vary in size dramatically: from a few centimetres to 5 metres in height. Initially, the sun’s rays cause random dimples on the surface of the snow. Once such a dimple is formed, sunlight can be reflected within the dimple, increasing the localized sublimation. As this accelerates, deep troughs are formed, leaving peaks of ice standing between them.

understanding atomic structure and quantum theory.

out of energy.

Quantum physicists discovered that physical atoms are made up of vortices of energy that are constantly spinning and vibrating, each one radiating its own unique energy signature. Therefore, if we really want to observe ourselves and find out what we are, we are really beings of energy and vibration, radiating our own unique energy signature -this is fact and is what quantum physics has shown us time
and time again. We are much more than what we perceive ourselves to be, and it’s time we begin to see ourselves in that light. If you observed the composition of an atom with a microscope you would see a small, invisible tornado-like vortex, with a number of infinitely small energy vortices called quarks and photons. These are what make up the structure of the atom. As you focused in closer and closer on the structure of the atom, you would see nothing, you would observe a physical void. The atom has no physical structure, we have no physical structure, physical things really don’t have any physical structure!

It’s quite the conundrum, isn’t it? Our experience tells us that our reality is made up of physical material things, and that our world is an independently existing objective one. The revelation that the
universe is not an assembly of physical parts, suggested by Newtonian physics, and instead comes from a holistic entanglement of immaterial energy waves stems from the work of Albert Einstein, Max Planck and
Werner Heisenberg, among others.

The Role of Consciousness in Quantum Mechanics 

What does it mean that our physical material reality isn’t really
physical at all? It could mean a number of things, and concepts such
as this cannot be explored if scientists remain within the boundaries
of the only perceived world existing, the world we see. As Nikola Tesla supposedly said:

“The day science begins to study non-physical phenomena, it will make more progress in one decade than in all the previous centuries of its existence.”

Fortunately, many scientists have already taken the leap, and have already questioned the meaning and implications of what we’ve discovered with quantum physics. One of these potential revelations is that “the observer creates the reality.”

A fundamental conclusion of the new physics also acknowledges that the
observer creates the reality. As observers, we are personally involved with the creation of our own reality. Physicists are being forced to admit that the universe is a “mental” construction.

Pioneering physicist Sir James Jeans wrote: “The stream of knowledge is heading toward a non-mechanical reality; the universe begins to look more like a great thought than like a great machine. Mind no longer appears to be an accidental intruder into the realm of matter, we ought rather hail it as the creator and governor of the realm of matter. (R. C. Henry, “The Mental Universe”; Nature 436:29, 2005)

One great example that illustrates the role of consciousness within the physical material world (which we know not to be so physical) is the double slit experiment. This experiment has been used multiple times to explore the role of consciousness in shaping the nature of physical reality.

A double-slit optical system was used to test the possible role of consciousness in the collapse of the quantum wave-function. The ratio of the interference pattern’s double-slit spectral power to its single-slit spectral power was predicted to decrease when attention was focused toward the double-slit as compared to away from it. The study found that factors associated with consciousness, such as meditation, experience, electrocortical markers of focused attention and psychological factors such as openness and absorption, significantly correlated in predicted ways with perturbations in the double-slit interference pattern.

Thermoelectric Effect

The thermoelectric effect is the direct conversion of temperature differences to electric voltage and vice versa. A thermoelectric device creates voltage when there is a different temperature on each side. Conversely, when a voltage is applied to it, it creates a temperature difference. At the atomic scale, an applied temperature gradient causes charge carriers in the material to diffuse from the hot side to the cold side.

This effect can be used to generate electricity, measure temperature or change the temperature of objects. Because the direction of heating and cooling is determined by the polarity of the applied voltage, thermoelectric devices can be used as temperature controllers.

The term "thermoelectric effect" encompasses three separately identified effects:
The Seebeck effect,
Peltier effect, and
Thomson effect.

1. The Seebeck effect

The Seebeck effect is the conversion of temperature differences directly into electricity and is named after the Baltic German physicist Thomas Johann Seebeck. Seebeck, in 1821, discovered that a compass needle would be deflected by a closed loop formed by two different metals joined in two places, with a temperature difference between the junctions. This was because the metals responded to the temperature difference in different ways, creating a current loop and a magnetic field. Seebeck did not recognize there was an electric current involved, so he called the phenomenon the thermomagnetic effect. Danish physicist Hans Christian Oersted rectified the mistake and coined the term "thermoelectricity".

2. The Peltier effect

The Peltier effect is the presence of heating or cooling at an electrified junction of two different conductors and is named after French physicist Jean Charles Athanase Peltier, who discovered it in 1834. When a current is made to flow through a junction between two conductors A and B, heat may be generated (or removed) at the junction.

3. Thomson effect

In many materials, the Seebeck coefficient is not constant in temperature, and so a spatial gradient in temperature can result in a gradient in the Seebeck coefficient. If a current is driven through this gradient then a continuous version of the Peltier effect will occur. This Thomson effect was predicted and subsequently observed by Lord Kelvin in 1851. It describes the heating or cooling of a current-carrying conductor with a temperature gradient.

Applications

Thermoelectric generator

The Seebeck effect is used in thermoelectric generators, which function like heat engines, but are less bulky, have no moving parts, and are typically more expensive and less efficient. They have a use in power plants for converting waste heat into additional electrical power (a form of energy recycling) and in automobiles as automotive thermoelectric generators (ATGs) for increasing fuel efficiency. Space probes often use radioisotope thermoelectric generators with the same mechanism but using radioisotopes to generate the required heat difference.

Peltier effect: Thermoelectric cooling
The Peltier effect can be used to create a refrigerator that is compact and has no circulating fluid or moving parts. Such refrigerators are useful in applications where their advantages outweigh the disadvantage of their very low efficiency.

Temperature measurement:

Thermocouples and thermopiles are devices that use the Seebeck effect to measure the temperature difference between two objects, one connected to a voltmeter and the other to the probe. The temperature of the voltmeter, and hence that of the material being measured by the probe, can be measured separately using cold junction compensation techniques.

Thermal cyclers for polymerase chain reaction

The Peltier effect is used by many thermal cyclers, laboratory devices used to amplify DNA by the polymerase chain reaction (PCR). PCR requires the cyclic heating and cooling of samples to specified temperatures. The inclusion of many thermocouples in a small space enables many samples to be amplified in parallel.

वॉशिंगटन. अमेरिकी स्पेस एजेंसी नासा ने मार्स एक्सप्लोरेशन प्रोग्राम से जुड़ा बड़ा खुलासा किया है। नासा ने मंगल ग्रह पर पानी होने की पुष्टि की है। साइंटिस्ट्स का मानना है कि मंगल ग्रह पर देखी गई गहरी लकीरों को अब तरल पानी के सामयिक बहाव से जोड़कर देखा जा सकता है। नासा के सैटेलाइट से मिला डाटा से पता चलता है कि चोटियों पर दिखने वाले ये लक्षण नमक की मौजूदगी से जुड़े हैं। अहम बात है कि ऐसा नमक, पानी के जमने और भांप बनने के तापमान को भी बदल सकते हैं। इससे पानी ज्यादा समय तक बह सकता है। नासा के इस खुलासे से मंगल ग्रह पर जीवन होने की नई उम्मीद जगी है।

लुजेंद्र की बात पर लगी मुहर
मंगल पर पानी मिलने की संभावना इसलिए जोर पकड़ी थी, क्योंकि नासा ने इस अनाउंसमेंट में लुजेंद्र ओझा नाम के पीएचडी स्टूडेंट के शामिल होने की बात कही थी। 2011 में ग्रैजुएट कर चुके 21 वर्षीय लुजेंद्र ने मंगल पर पानी के संभावित लक्षण खोजे हैं। बता दें कि वैज्ञानिकों को मंगल के ध्रुवों पर जमे हुए पानी की जानकारी तो पहले से है, लेकिन इसे लिक्विड फॉर्म में खोजा जाना अभी बाकी है।

ओझा ने बताया था, भाग्यशाली दुर्घटना
एरिजोना यूनिवर्सिटी में पढ़ाई के दौरान ओझा को 'संयोगवश' पहली बार इस बात के सबूत मिले थे कि मंगल पर लिक्विड फॉर्म में पानी मौजूद है। प्लैनेट की सतह की तस्वीरों की स्टडी के बाद उन्हें इस बात के सबूत मिले थे। ओझा ने इस खोज को 'भाग्यशाली संयोग' बताते हुए कहा कि शुरुआत में उन्हें इसके बारे में समझ में नहीं आया। मंगल की सतह पर बने गड्ढों की कई साल तक स्टडी के बाद पता चला कि ये बहते पानी के कारण बने हैं।
 
40 साल पहले मिले थे पोल पर बर्फ के सबूत
मंगल पर पानी के सबूत मिलना कोई नई बात नहीं है। करीब चार दशक पहले इस प्लैनेट के पोल पर बर्फ की खोज की गई थी। इसके अलावा, ग्रह की सतह पर रगड़ के निशान इस ओर इशारा करते हैं कि लाखों साल पहले यहां समुद्र और नदियां रही होंगी। हालांकि, इस ग्रह पर कम ग्रैविटी और वहां के वायुमंडल के आधार पर माना जाता है कि ग्रह पर मौजूद पानी स्पेस में इवैपेरेट (वाष्पित) हो गया होगा। प्लैनेट पर लिक्विड पानी की यह पहली खोज है।

Step 1: The Donation

1. Donor registers
2. Health history and mini physical are completed
3. About 1 pint of blood and several small test tubes are collected from each donor
4. The bag, test tubes and the donor record are labeled with an identical bar code label to keep track of the donation
5. The donation is stored in iced coolers until it is transported to a Red Cross center

Step 2: Processing

1. Donated blood is scanned into a computer database
2. Most blood is spun in centrifuges to separate the transfusable components – red cells, platelets, and plasma
3. The primary components like plasma, can be further manufactured into components such as cryoprecipitate
4. Red cells are then leuko-reduced
5. Single donor platelets are leukoreduced and bacterially tested.
6. Test tubes are sent for testing.

Step 3: Testing

1. Steps 2 and 3 take place in parallel
2. The test tubes are received in Red Cross National Testing Laboratories
3. A dozen tests are performed on each unit of donated blood – to establish the blood type and test for infectious diseases
4. Test results are transferred electronically to the manufacturing facility within 24 hours
5. If a test result is positive, the unit is discarded and the donor is notified. Test results are confidential and are only shared with the donor, except as may be required by law

Step 4: Storage

1. When test results are received, units suitable for transfusion are labeled and stored
2. Red Cells are stored in refrigerators at 6ºC for up to 42 days
3. Platelets are stored at room temperature in agitators for up to five days
4. Plasma and cryo are frozen and stored in freezers for up to one year

Step 5: Distribution

Blood is available to be shipped to hospitals 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Dengue fever is so excruciating that it is often called the “bone breaker,” causing severe pain in the joints and abdomen, vomiting, and circulatory system failure. It’s nearly impossible to treat, so the only way to cut down on incidences of the disease is to decrease the number of mosquitoes that carry it. One startling effective way to do that: genetically modifying mosquitos so their offspring won't survive. A year-long trial with genetically modified mosquitoes in northeast Brazil has been the most successful yet, reducing the population of the disease-carrying insects by 95 percent.

The British biotech company Oxitec has been developing a unique form of pest control for over a decade. Since dengue is primarily spread through the mosquito species Aedes aegypti, Oxitec has engineered a male mosquito that, to female mosquitoes in the wild, looks just like the usual males. However, when the mosquitoes mate, their young carry a mutation that kills them before they’re able to reproduce or transmit the disease.
Juazeiro, a city in northeast Brazil, was a great place to try them out. After it was wiped out for 20 years, dengue has been on the rise in Brazil, with an estimated 16 million new cases every year. Many of the mosquitoes that carry the disease are also resistant to pesticides, which meant that Brazilians were left with few options to decrease dengue’s prevalence. The neighborhood in which the researchers tested the modified mosquitoes was a low-income area with high rates of dengue infection, according to local public health officials. Over a one-year period, the researchers released the modified males into the local environment and monitored the resulting eggs, looking for a characteristic fluorescent marker engineered into the males’ genome. In the course of that year, the number of disease-carrying mosquitoes decreased by 95 percent as compared to a control group in a neighborhood next door.
This isn’t Oxitec’s first attempt to decrease the prevalence of disease-carrying mosquitoes—the company did another trial in the Cayman Islands in 2010—but this test was the most successful. The researchers hope to scale up their efforts to eradicate dengue and the insects that carry it in a larger area.

Definition & Working Principle of Transformer

Electrical power transformer is a static device which transforms electrical energy from one circuit to another without any direct electrical connection and with the help of mutual induction between two windings. It transforms power from one circuit to another without changing its frequency but may be in different voltage level.

Working Principle of Transformer

The working principle of transformer is very simple. It depends upon Faraday's law of electromagnetic induction. Actually, mutual induction between two or more winding is responsible for transformation action in an electrical transformer.

Faraday's Laws of Electromagnetic Induction

According to these Faraday's laws,

"Rate of change of flux linkage with respect to time is directly proportional to the induced EMF in a conductor or coil".

Basic Theory of Transformer

Say you have one winding which is supplied by an alternating electrical source. The alternating  current  through the winding produces a continually changing flux or alternating flux that surrounds the winding. If any other winding is brought nearer to the previous one, obviously some portion of this flux will link with the second. As this flux is continually changing in its amplitude and direction, there must be a change in flux linkage in the second winding or coil.

According to Faraday's law of electromagnetic induction, there must be an EMF induced in the second. If the circuit of the later winding is closed, there must be an  current flowing through it. This is the simplest form of electrical power transformer and this is the most basic of working principle of transformer.

For better understanding, we are trying to repeat the above explanation in a more brief way here. Whenever we apply alternating  current  to an electric coil, there will be an alternating flux surrounding that coil. Now if we bring another coil near the first one, there will be an alternating flux linkage with that second coil. As the flux is alternating, there will be obviously a rate of change in flux linkage with respect to time in the second coil. Naturally emf will be induced in it as per Faraday's law of electromagnetic induction. This is the most basic concept of the theory of transformer.

The winding which takes electrical power from the source, is generally known as primary winding of transformer. Here in our above example it is first winding.

The winding which gives the desired output voltage due to mutual induction in the transformer, is commonly known as secondary winding of transformer. Here in our example it is second winding.

The above mentioned form of transformer is theoretically possible but not practically, because in open air very tiny portion of the flux of the first winding will link with second; so the  current that flows through the closed circuit of later, will be so small in amount that it will be difficult to measure.

The rate of change of flux linkage depends upon the amount of linked flux with the second winding. So, it is desired to be linked to almost all flux of primary winding to the secondary winding. This is effectively and efficiently done by placing one low reluctance path common to both of the winding. This low reluctance path is core of transformer, through which maximum number of flux produced by the primary is passed through and linked with the secondary winding. This is the most basic theory of transformer.

Main Constructional Parts of Transformer

The three main parts of a transformer are,
Primary Winding of transformer - which produces magnetic flux when it is connected to electrical source.

Magnetic Core of transformer - the magnetic flux produced by the primary winding, that will pass through this low reluctance path linked with secondary winding and create a closed magnetic circuit.

Secondary Winding of transformer - the flux, produced by primary winding, passes through the core, will link with the secondary winding. This winding also wounds on the same core and gives the desired output of the transformer.
